What's New in Historic Downtown Killeen This Summer

If you moved to Killeen more than five years ago, you probably remember downtown as a place you drove past on the way to somewhere else. Avenue D was a stretch of quiet storefronts. Nights ended early. That version of downtown is gone, and the numbers that describe the change are more dramatic than most residents realize.

The Occupancy Number That Explains Everything

Here is the shift in one statistic. In just one year, the downtown business occupancy rate went from 30 percent to nearly 80 percent, according to the City of Killeen's Downtown Revitalization Program. That is not a soft trend line. That is a district filling in block by block.

The city put grant money behind the change, and it worked. Grant and incentive programs allowed for 35 new small and locally-owned businesses to open in downtown, bringing life to once vacant buildings and adding nearly 90 jobs to the local economy. The effort was recognized statewide, with the Downtown Revitalization program winning the Texas Downtown Achievement award for the Best Economic Game Changer, an award that recognizes a project, program or promotion that had a measurable impact on a downtown or commercial district in a striking and powerful manner.

For residents, that award matters less than what it means on a Friday night. You can now build an evening entirely from independent operators inside a four-block walk.

Avenue D Is the Anchor

The clearest place to see the shift is Avenue D, where a mix of chef-driven food and nightlife opened in the last year.

• Vida Roxy at 321 N. is the newest addition. Vida Roxy, a new restaurant and bar, is now officially open in downtown Killeen, and the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce helped cut the ribbon on the new business on Dec. 19. The city called it a "nightlife spot," which is a category downtown genuinely did not have a year ago.
• StrikeOut Wingz at 224 East Avenue D has become one of the operators the Killeen Convention and Visitors Bureau features by name. Visit Killeen described the spot as a downtown Killeen spot serving up bold flavors, crispy wings, and the kind of food that makes you want to come back and try another sauce, with a story about local flavor and community.
• CHIC French Bakery covers the morning shift. Visit Killeen calls it out for flaky croissants, delicate pastries, and the kind of coffee that makes you slow down for a minute. If you have not been in a while, this is the pastry case that changed what a Killeen morning can look like.
• Urban Bird Hot Chicken is the Nashville-style hot chicken newcomer, part of the same downtown circuit.

Two more Avenue D storefronts are on deck. Avenue D is expected to add three new businesses: On What Grounds Coffeehouse, a new family-owned coffee business, and The Scarlet Page, an independent bookshop. A locally owned coffee shop and an independent bookstore on the same block is the sort of pairing that used to require a drive to Salado or Georgetown.

What's Coming to Avenue C and the Surrounding Blocks

Downtown's growth is not just food. Movement studios and wellness are moving in too. Pilates Barre, which is on Avenue C, held a soft opening Saturday and more businesses are expected to follow, according to the Killeen Daily Herald's January 2026 rundown.

The city has also formalized how residents find these places. The City of Killeen unveiled its first Shop Downtown Business Directory, complete with 59 businesses, including restaurants and businesses that specialize in entertainment, education, retail, self-care and more. If you have not opened it, the directory is the fastest way to see how much of downtown you have not yet walked through.

The pace shows no sign of easing. In its year-end summary, the City of Killeen said, "We estimate that approximately 215 businesses have received a Certificate of Occupancy this year, reflecting continued growth and investment in Killeen." Not all of those are downtown, but the density of new openings on Avenues C and D suggests where a real share of them landed.

A Summer Saturday, Built Entirely from Downtown

Here is what a full downtown Saturday looks like now, using only businesses within walking distance of Avenue D.

You can quibble with the order. The point is that the list exists at all. Two summers ago, this itinerary would have required at least three car trips and a run out to Harker Heights.

The Events Worth Blocking Off

The City of Killeen released the 2026 calendar in December, and it leans heavier on downtown programming than in previous years. The City of Killeen released its 2026 Calendar of Events, featuring a yearlong lineup of festivals, cultural celebrations, recreational activities, and community gatherings, with events hosted by city departments and community partners.

A few dates that matter most for residents this summer:

• Red White & Blue Music Festival, July 4. The Red White & Blue Music Festival returns to Historic Downtown Killeen on Saturday, July 4 from 6 to 10 p.m. Celebrate 250 years of America with an evening of live entertainment, food trucks, vendors, family activities, a Jeep Jam, and fireworks. Free and open to the public. The city describes the fireworks as the largest fireworks display in Central Texas. If you have been driving to Belton or Temple to watch fireworks, the shorter option is now downtown.
• DCI at Leo Buckley Stadium, July 16. Drum Corps International at Leo Buckley Stadium is happening on Thursday, July 16, 2026 from 8:20 PM. Even if you have never watched competitive drum corps, this is the kind of event that used to require a drive to Austin or San Antonio.
• Backyard Brew Fest, July 25. Backyard Brew Fest on July 25 has live music, food vendors, beer, bratwurst, backyard games, competitions, prizes, local vendors, face painting, and family-friendly entertainment, held from noon to 5 p.m. at the Killeen Special Events Center at 3301 S.W.S. Young Drive.
• Pathfinder Palooza, July 25. Pathfinder Palooza is happening on Saturday, July 25, 2026 from 11:00 AM at Texas A&M University Central Texas, Killeen.

Later in the year, downtown carries the calendar. The season begins the first Friday of December with the Tree Lighting Ceremony in Downtown, followed by a Jingle Bell Dash 5K on the first Saturday of December, and on the second Saturday of December, the streets of Downtown come alive with the annual Christmas Parade and Festival of Holidays.

What This Means If You Already Live Here

Two years ago, the honest answer to "where should we take out-of-town guests?" was Salado or Belton's downtown. That answer is changing.

The Avenue D corridor now supports a full evening out. Avenue C is following, with Pilates Barre first through the door. On What Grounds Coffeehouse and The Scarlet Page will give downtown its first proper independent coffee-and-books pairing. And the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce says downtown Killeen should see numerous businesses opening there throughout the rest of 2026.

For residents who bought homes near central Killeen, that shift matters in a specific way. The walk-to score of your neighborhood is quietly rising. The list of places you can reach without getting in the car on a Saturday morning is longer this July than it was last July, and it will be longer next July than it is now.
